TTG: Learn to play: Smash Up
(Gaming)

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

At the beginning of a game of Smash Up, players take turns drafting one of several faction decks. Once each player has two decks, they shuffle them together, combining their distinct abilities into a unique 40-card deck. Players then deal out a number of Base cards, and play their decks to attempt to have the most power on a base when it is scored.

It may sound simple, but how simple is it when your opponent's Zombie-Ninja Assassinates your minions and then creates an Outbreak, loading the Base with minions from their discard pile? Or when their Pirate-Dinosaurs Full Sail onto the base with the mighty King Rex, whose massive power dwarfs that of other minions? In Smash Up, each combination gives a different experience (Pirate-Aliens, for example, play very different than Pirate-Zombies). And with 8 factions in the Smash Up core set, there are tons of combinations to try out!

It's 2015 and the Geek has inherited the earth. Popular media is consumed with the images and stories plucked from the pages of comics... Geeks have traditionally been made up of outsiders and disenfranchised but now with it being so Chic is that still true? This panel is an open discussion by performers and creators within and of popular media, who have an interest in or are currently opening up a wider POV into the new Chic Diaspora...

1:00 PM

Designing Characters for Animation
(Panel)

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Designing characters for animation is all about creating personalities.  An artist may be able to make a beautiful piece of art, but that art must be in service to the creation of a believable character.  The viewer must be able to connect with the human part of that character, whether it's actually a human or, let's say, a fireplug.  And we must recognize what kind of 'person' that fireplug is.  Expression, gesture, design - all must contribute to the creation of that personality, and it should all come together so that a single drawing will communicate that.  And I think you know you've got a real character on your hands when that character begins to tell you what she/he will do and what she/he will not do!

- Room 230A

Attending Guests: Joel Adams, Steve Gordon, Dean Yeagle

Swamp Thing panel plus Meet & Greet
(Panel)

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

How many comic book characters can you name that have been with us for over 40 years without ever having worn a cape or a single stitch of spandex?  Swamp Thing rose from the bayous of Louisiana and has been with us from the days of fifteen cent comics right up to the four dollar wave of the New 52. Big Wow! is going to introduce you to four reasons why this character has endured for over four decades.

Tom Yeates began penciling and inking the second run of Swamp Thing in 1982 to coincide with the opening of the first Swamp Thing movie. Mr. Yeates gave us some of the most memorable and compelling covers including issue #21, Alan Moore’s “The Anatomy Lesson”

Steven Bissette & John Totleban worked with Alan Moore to redefine the history and character of Swamp Thing. While working on the book the pencil and ink duo were multiple Kirby Award winners including “Best Art Team”.

Rick Veitch was the first artist to pencil a fully realized John Constantine in his first full issue appearance of Swamp Thing #37. Mr Veitch also has the distinction of being the first writer/artist to take creative control of the series.

These four Kubert School Alumni will share stories on all things Swampy and answer any questions you may have.

TTG: Learn to play: Ticket To Ride
(Gaming)

11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

At the beginning of the main game, players are dealt four train car cards as their playing hand. They are also dealt three "destination ticket" cards, each of which shows a pair of cities on the map. These become goals, representing two end-points which players are secretly attempting to connect. The player must keep at least two of these destination cards and discard unwanted tickets to the bottom of the stack, if any. Once kept, a destination ticket may not be discarded for the rest of game. Each player also selects a group of 45 colored train pieces with a matching scoring marker.

Each turn, players have 1 of 3 options to choose from. They may (1) draw two railway car cards in various colours (or a single wild Locomotive card) from the draw piles, or (2) draw three additional destination ticket cards and keep at least one (replacing undesired tickets at the bottom of the stack), or (3) play their collected railway car cards from their hand to claim routes on the board which is a map of the United States and southern Canada and place the corresponding number of train pieces from their store on the claimed route, thereby earning points. The routes are of varying lengths (requiring varying numbers of matching coloured cards), and each discrete route marked on the board can be claimed by only a single player. Some cities are connected by two parallel routes that can each be claimed by a different player (unless the game is played by 3 or fewer players, in which case only one of the routes can be claimed). The same player may not claim both parallel routes between two adjacent cities. Longer routes are worth progressively more points than shorter routes, e.g., a route of length four is worth more than two routes of length two.

On his or her turn, a player can claim any route anywhere on the board that has not already been claimed, regardless of whether the route helps to complete his or her destination tickets. The routes score points by themselves, as mentioned above, but routes not connected to a player's destination do not help him or her in reaching the destination or completing his or her destination ticket.

The game ends when one player has exhausted or nearly exhausted his or her supply of coloured train pieces. When this occurs, every player then plays one additional turn, after which they each reveal their previously hidden destination tickets. Additional points are awarded for having successfully connected the destinations on the cards, whereas points are subtracted for any incomplete tickets. A ten-point bonus is awarded to the player who has the longest continuously connected set of routes, not including branches.
