After a career as the Executive Art Director at Capitol Records and as the creator, editor, and designer of the magazines Cinema andMovies International, as well as glamour photographer, historian (Here's Looking At You, Kid), novelist (the Death Dealer series), and screenwriter (Sahara, King Solomon's Mines, Revenge of the Ninja, etc.), Jim Silke turned, in 1991 at age sixty, to his first love — writing and drawing comics.
He has since completed the graphic novels, Rascals In Paradise and Bettie Page, Queen of the Nile, plus three illustrated art books, two about the world's leading pin-up girl, Bettie Page: Queen of Hearts and Bettie Page Rules, and one about his often hilarious life as a pin-up artist, Pin-Up: The Illegitimate Art. All his books are published by Dark Horse Books. His latest work, Dames, Dolls and Gun Molls, an art book about the legendary paperback cover artist Robert A. Maguire, will be published in the summer of 2009.
Silke's resume also includes Chairman of Film Studies at the American Film Institute, Chairman of the California Art Commission, and many memorable years as costume designer, writer, and constultant for his best friend, the legendary film director Sam Peckinpah.
Throughout his career, Silke has won many awards, including a Grammy for the cover of Judy at Carnegie Hall, an Emmy citation for AFI's James Cagney Life Achievement Award, and numerous citations from The New York Art Directors' Club, The Society of Illustrators, and the Los Angeles Art Directors' Club.
After the publication of his first graphic novel, his fans began to seek out his paintings of women. That led him to his current career, "pin-up artist." Today, he continues to write and draw from his home studio in Woodland Hills, CA, where he lives with his wife and sometimes model, Kurtesa. He is currently working on a new art book, Nude, the Job and Craft of Figure Drawing, and a graphic novel, Mata Hari Escapes.
